Finding the cheapest Thanksgiving groceries

With food prices on the rise, many people can find their bill for Thanksgiving dinner to be quite staggering.

We went to the Charlotte farmers market to see if we could find better buys than the grocery store. We purchased apples, a pie pumpkin, potatoes, green beans, collard greens, cabbage and cornbread mix. The total bill came to just under $20.

We tried the same shopping excursion at a local grocery store and purchased the same amounts of the same ingredients. The bill was just under $38.

While the grocery store was more expensive, we found some folks willing to pay the extra price for convenience. Some neighborhoods don't have farmers markets nearby so travel and time are factored in.

The average American spends $50 on a Thanksgiving dinner including the turkey.
