Washington State man convicted of stealing local woman’s identity

An Iredell County woman filed a report over the summer about fraudulent charges on her debit card.

She found two charges had been made against her card in April.

In May, she received a call confirming an order for shipment. She was able to cancel that fraudulent order. But during that phone call, she discovered a store credit card had been issued in her name.

In June, the woman learned about yet another credit card issued in her name when it arrived in the mail.

The Sheriff's Office investigated the woman's report and found leads pointing back to Washington State area. Detectives reached out to law enforcement in the Washington area and discovered an investigation underway there as well with multiple victims tied to the same suspect.

Iredell County detectives and investigators from Washington State worked together and built a case against their suspect.

Michael Reno was convicted of Identity Theft 1st degree, Identity Theft 2nd degree, 1 count of "viewing depictions of minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct in the second degree".

Reno was sentenced to 68 months in prison on the 1st degree charge, and 57 months on the 2nd degree charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
