CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a 2-year-old boy was killed in a crash that shut down one side of I-77 in Charlotte Saturday.
Troopers say two vehicles were racing between the Remount Road and West Boulevard exits just before 1 am when both vehicles lost control.
One vehicle hit a guard rail and both hit the median before coming to a stop, troopers say. The driver in one car was ejected. The toddler, Trevon Nichols, was inside the second vehicle.
Troopers say the young boy was in a car seat at the time. The driver and an adult passenger in the second vehicle were hurt.
The adult passenger is in serious condition as of Monday morning, according to a spokesperson at CMC hospital.
Police say they have not arrested anyone, but do expect to file charges before this case is closed.
The northbound side of I-77 between the Remount Road and West Boulevard exits was closed for several hours Saturday while police investigated.
