Boone County Water District GM arrested for keeping cash

The General Manager of the Boone County Water District is out of jail on bondl after an arrest for abuse of public trust.

Phil Trzop, 62, of Walton was also just re-sworn in as mayor of Walton.

According to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, the three week investigation initially revealed Trzop used cash from the sales of scrap metal to give Christmas bonuses to employees.

However, the more the detectives delved into it, the numbers just didn't match up.  Trzop finally admitted to having money at his house and relinquished it to the detectives.

A warrant for Trzop was served just before noon on Friday.

"They out there repairing sewers all the time so they're gonna have scrap, old scrap, new from the repairs and in lieu of throwing that away, they salvage it, they sell it. The problem with that was for the first three years they were doing that, from say '08 to '11, they were getting cash for it," said Scheben.

Abuse of public trust is a Class C felony punishable by five to 10 years in the state penitentiary.

Bond was originally set at $50,000 when he was arrested, but the judge reduced that amount to $20,000. Trzop was able to bond out at 10 percent and was released from jail around 8 p.m. on Friday night.

Phil Trzop was the mayor of Walton from 1994 until 2010.  He was elected again in November of 2012.
