CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
A man pleaded guilty to the attempted first degree murder of his 2-year-old daughter in January, according to the District Attorney's Office.
On January 15, Derrick Summers, 30, parked his car on the side of I-77 near Clanton Road, removed her from her car seat, and ran into oncoming traffic with the child in his arms, the report states.
The pair was struck by a vehicle, and both suffered serious injuries.
The child is still recovering from her injuries, officials told WBTV Wednesday.
The accident caused a series of crashes, causing a pile-up which hospitalized at least five people with serious injuries. The interstate was shut down for hours and traffic had to be re-routed.
Prior to the incident, Summers told the child's mother that he would kill her and the child, and sent a text message to several people indicating his intent, officials said.
Summers was sentenced Wednesday to 108 to 142 months in prison.
