HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) -
Police in Huntersville arrested a man they say attempted to rob two women in the same shopping center parking lot Monday morning.
Darrin Keith Patterson, 47, of Cornelius, was arrested on Tuesday after a tip to Crimestoppers led police to him. Cornelius Police assisted with the arrest, the Huntersville Police Department said.
Patterson is currently on federal probation for a previous carjacking in New York, and is a registered sex offender, police say.
The incident began when officers were first called to the Home Goods parking lot in the Northcross Shopping Center before 10:30 a.m. Monday.
The first woman told police a man approached her and demanded her vehicle. She refused and he ran away.
Just after 10:30 a.m., officers were called to the Target parking lot - also in the Northcross Shopping Center.
This time, the female victim told police the man reached into the open window of her vehicle, attempted to take the keys, and demanded her property.
The man ran away, across Sam Furr Road. He got into a cab on Holly Point Drive and was dropped off at Old Statesville Road, just south of East Catawba Avenue in Cornelius.
Officers said both females and the cab driver identified the man in the attached photos.
