CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
The Carolina Panthers have fired a coach after the Panthers lost to the Broncos on Sunday, 36-14.
During a press conference on Monday morning, head coach Ron Rivera announced that special teams coach Brian Murphy had been fired from the team.
Murphy has been with the Panther as special teams coordinator since in 2011.
Rivera told reporters on Monday afternoon that Murphy has been replaced by Richard Rodgers.
Rodgers joins the Panthers in 2012 as the team's assistant special teams coach. He came to the NFL with 23 years of college football experience.
According to his bio on the Panthers website, before joining the Panthers, Murphy worked with the Minnesota Vikings' for five seasons, the last two as special teams coordinator.
Murphy coached special teams at Wisconsin from 2002-05 in addition to overseeing outside linebackers.
He broke into coaching on the college level in 1992 at Benedictine, handling the defensive line. Murphy then became assistant recruiting coordinator and academic liaison for Wisconsin in 1993 and worked with the Badgers offensive and defensive lines as a graduate assistant from 1994-96.
Next, Murphy had one-year stints at Baylor as defensive backs coach in 1997, University of San Diego as defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator in 1998 and his alma mater, Lehigh, as defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator in 1999.
He returned to Wisconsin as an administrative assistant in 2000 until moving to special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2002.
