CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

All across the country, the nation is paying tribute to our veterans.

Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11th each year. It is a day to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, their willingness to serve, and their sacrifices. The federal holiday this year is observed Monday, November 12.

Nationwide, Sunday's commemorations included somber traditions such as the wreath-laying in Virginia attended by President Obama. The ceremony is in honor of those who served our country, but did not return home.

In California, a war memorial cross that once stood in a national park before being deemed unconstitutional is being resurrected. The return of the cross caps a landmark legal case for veterans fighting similar battles on public lands.

Storm-ravaged New York hosted the country's largest Veterans Day parade. Turnout was sparse along some sections of the 30-block route, but it was clear the love of country survived the storm.

Individual communities are holding their own celebrations to commemorate the veterans who live and work in their communities. Many local businesses are also offering discounts and specials to veterans and their families as a sign of appreciation.
