Much-needed rain returns to the Carolinas this week

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A storm system in the Midwest could bring showers to the still-dry Carolinas early this week.

This system has a history of bringing thunderstorms to the plains and heavy snow from Salt Lake City to Denver.  However, the timing of the system will keep thunderstorm chances at bay and temperatures will remain warm enough to allow for only rain.

Showers will be possible in the Carolinas late Monday into early Tuesday.

Charlotte is currently running a 7 inch rainfall deficit this year and much of Mecklenburg and the surrounding counties are now under a Moderate drought.  Tuesday's front will only cause a slight dent in our drought.

Rainfall totals will generally be less than half an inch, with most areas receiving roughly a quarter of an inch.
