Charlotte, NC (WBTV) – Ardrey Kell High School took the 4A State Championship in women's golf for the second time in three years.
The Knights felt confident after an undefeated regular season and a second place finish at the regional. However, only three players qualified for states which meant there was no room for error.
They lead by 2 strokes the first day and sealed the deal with a final day 6 shots better than their first.
Although the title is the goal, Coach Bart Whitney emphasizes the importance on enjoying the experience. He said he has a great group of girls, with a lot of variety amongst them.
Within the 8 member team, there is every grade level and experience ranges from brand new to seasoned veterans.
Two of the seniors on the team will go on to play at the collegiate level,
one to Wofford and one to Appalachian State University.
Coach went on to say that last year there was a lot of unexpected pressure, being the defending champ, and it may have had something to do with coming in third. This year, the talk started towards the end of the regular season, and they were more prepared for it.
