NC Republicans boost majorities in Legislature

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Republicans expanded their control in the North Carolina General Assembly by gaining a veto-proof supermajority in the House and keeping one in the Senate.

Unofficial results Tuesday show Republicans winning 32 seats in the Senate and 76 in the House.

Republicans have held a 68-52 lead and 31-19 advantage in the Senate over the Democrats during the past two years.

Results show House Democrats Martha Alexander, Ray Rapp and Marian McLawhorn lost their seats, while Republicans won at least three open seats previously held by Democrats.

Republican Sen. Don East won his seat posthumously and will be succeeded by an outgoing House member.

Democratic Sen. Doug Berger of Franklin County lost to Republican Chad Barefoot in a retooled Triangle-area district.
