Remember the days following the terrorist attacks of 9/11?
"United We Stand" was the rallying cry as we comforted one another and searched for solidarity.
Sadly, most of the decade following has been filled with finger pointing, blame, and anything but union.
As a people, we are strongly divided…almost right down the middle.
But now that the election is over, we face the common enemy of a $16 trillion debt that we need attack as a united force.
We can debate how we arrived at this financial cliff, but there's no debate that we're on the edge.
As it stands right now, every American man, woman and child is saddled with $52,000 of red ink.
You can't long operate your home budget in such a way and our government can't either.
Somehow, some way, our leaders have to right a floundering ship, lest we pass this mess on to our children and grandchildren.
To be clear, our Editorial Board is not suggesting that anyone forgo their fundamental positions of principal, but rather, find ways to constructively work together.
Just such action took place during the Reagan and Clinton tenures and the nation was better off for it.
Real and painful sacrifice by each us is going to come, one way or another.
We can no longer afford to kick the can down the road.
