March for Domestic Violence following double homicide

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The Domestic Violence Advocacy Council is inviting the public to march on the Square in Uptown Charlotte in response to the most recent domestic violence-related homicides in Mecklenburg County.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Jacquece A. Forest, 26, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder in the murders of Jennifer Crystal Smith, 25, and Luc Eric Gonzalez, 25.

This is the fifth & sixth Mecklenburg County domestic violence-related homicide of 2012. Last year there were a total of four people killed at the hands of their intimate partner or due to domestic violence. These are the 51st and 52nd DV-related homicides in North Carolina this year.

The march, which takes place Thursday at 12:15 p.m. at the Square at Trade and Tryon Streets, is intended to broaden the public's awareness that help is available, including programs and services offering safety planning.

Free parking will be available at the Hal Marshall County Services Center, located at 700 N. Tryon St. A free trolley runs the length of Tryon Street every seven minutes and from the Government offices on 4th St.

The DVAC holds marches the Thursday following all deaths in Mecklenburg County that have been ruled a result of domestic violence.
