CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
An unexpected cold snap in October means your thermostat might kick on several times a night. Is your heating system in tip top shape to handle it all?
Local heating companies are reporting a spike in 'no heating' calls.
Kenny Lusk, a technician with Morris Jenkins said the increase is keeping him busy.
"Last month or so we've generally getting off at 9 or 10, [Monday] night I think I got home after midnight," he said.
It may be that way for awhile. The uptick in no heat calls is keeping about 80 technicians from the company busy answering calls from morning to night.
All the more reason, Lusk said that regular maintenance is key.
"You never want to wait to the last moment to turn your heat on and figure it's not working at the time," he said. "Then have to scramble, miss work and adjust your schedule and have someone come out and figure out what's going on for you."
James Michael realized that Tuesday morning.
"It heats sometimes and sometimes it don't heat," he said. "The gas would come on but the blower wouldn't come on."
It's why Michael said now he subscribes to a regular maintenance plan for his heating system.
"They come out twice a year in the spring and in the fall," he said. "But it just got cold quicker. It generally doesn't get this cold right this time."
Most local heating companies offer a discount when you sign up for a yearly maintenance program.
