Hurricane Sandy gains strength

Hello again everyone, it's Paul Cameron in the WBTV newsroom.

Tonight at 5:00PM—as we come on air tonight, predictions are Hurricane Sandy will be coming ashore somewhere near Atlantic City, NJ. With a storm the size and power of Sandy, it really makes little difference the exact location of landfall. During the day, it has sped up its forward motion, which means it will hit harder, but hopefully not last as long. The real bug here is a winter storm front mixing with the hurricane to cause days of misery for the northeast. Eric Thomas will have the latest in his First Alert Forecast.

Sandy is also affecting our weather. Snow has been falling in the NC Mountains and Sugar Mountain Ski Resort plans to open its slopes this week. The hurricane has also caused great interruptions in air travel. We're live at Charlotte-Douglas to see how the airport is handling all the stranded travelers.

We now know why a UNC-Chapel Hill college freshman from Charlotte died over the weekend. He fell while climbing machinery at a concrete plant. Witnesses say he had been drinking.
