SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) -

A police chase involving a Rowan County Sheriff's deputy ended in a head on collision Friday afternoon in eastern Rowan County.

Few details are available, but officials did confirm for WBTV that a suspected drunk driver was being followed by a deputy through Granite Quarry towards Rockwell when the SUV, a Chevy Trailblazer, crossed the center line and crashed into another vehicle on the bridge.

Three Rowan County EMS ambulances responded, as well as the Rowan Rescue Squad, and several fire departments. The driver of the Trailblazer was pinned in for a short time.  That driver was identified as Danny Coggins, 63, of Mt. Gilead in Stanly County.

Investigators say Coggins was the driver who was the subject of the pursuit.  Originally suspected of being a drunk driver, investigators now say they are looking into the possibility that a medical problem caused Coggin to cross the center line.

At this time the extent of the injuries is not known, but emergency officials told WBTV that two adults and two children were being transported for treatment at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.

The driver of the other vehicle in the accident was Lee Readling, 43, of Norwood.

The deputy was not involved in the crash.
