Ron Greene Stadium at Burns High School will be closed for six months following a recommendation from the Cleveland County Health Department, officials said.
The decision comes after a student prank where goats were released onto the field last week.
The Health Department said it was worried because goats can carry E. coli, and it was unclear where the goats released on the field spent the night.
This comes after an outbreak of the virus, thought to have originated from the petting zoo at the Cleveland County Fair, left nearly 100 people sick and killed a Gaston County toddler.
Officials from the school district told WBTV that any activities planned for the field during the six-month period will be held at Kings Mountain High School.
