Four local colleges receive more than $5 million in science awards

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Several local colleges received millions of dollars in awards from the National Science Foundation.

Tuesday, Senator Kay Hagan announced the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Appalachian State University, Catawba College, and Davidson College received 14 awards worth more than $5 million to conduct research in a variety of academic areas.

"North Carolina is a leader in conducting groundbreaking research, and I'm pleased that UNC Charlotte, Catawba, ASU and Davidson are being recognized with these significant funding awards," Hagan said. "Investments in research and STEM education are key to ensuring our state and nation remain competitive in the 21st century global economy."

  • UNC Charlotte - 10 awards - $2,706,739
  • Appalachian State - 2 awards - $679,128
  • Catawba College - 1 award - $1,449,637
  • Davidson College - 1 award - $199,930

The NSF funds research and education in science and engineering through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. The Foundation accounts for about 20% of federal support to academic institutions for basic research.

  • East Carolina University - 1 award - $344,037
  • Saint Augustine's College - 1 award - $300,000
  • UNC Wilmington - 1 award - $69,811
  • Elizabeth City State - 1 award - $50,000
  • Elon University - 1 award - $38,685

Colleges and universities in North Carolina received a total of 107 awards worth $62,191,139.
