The Mallard Creek Bar-B-Cue and Brunswick Stew is a Mecklenburg County tradition. It has gained notoriety as a meet-and-greet for local politicians, but at heart – it is still a church barbecue put on by Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church in north Charlotte.
The 83rd annual event kicks off Thursday, October 25th at 10:00 a.m. and lasts until the food is gone. Nearly 20,000 people are expected to attend this year.
Volunteers started cooking at least a week in advance. They have prepared more than 14,000 pounds of pork and 2,500 gallons of Brunswick Stew.
Anyone who has been to a past Mallard Creek Bar-B-Cue knows traffic gets really heavy, but most people say it's worth it.
Once you get there, you can choose to stop in, sit down, and enjoy some fellowship – or you can grab and plate and be on your way. There are four drive-thru lanes in addition to the walk-up windows…plus plenty of picnic table seating.
The standard cost is $9, but there are a couple options that cost less. If you pay $9, you get either a plate of bbq, vinegar-based coleslaw, applesauce, and the church's world-famous Brunswick Stew or three sandwiches.
Proceeds benefit the church building fund and mission activities.
Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church is located at 11400 Mallard Creek Road in north Charlotte.
