(RNN) - The second presidential debate may have tackled controversial domestic and foreign issues, but it was another comment from Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney that simultaneously lit up social media.

After saying he would cut the subsidy to PBS and Big Bird during the first debate, this week's Romney gaff has to do with "binders full of women."

The off-the-cuff comment came while Romney was answering a question concerning how he would ensure equal pay and opportunity for women.

During his response, Romney said different women's groups brought him "binders full of women" during his search for female candidates who were qualified for positions on his cabinet while he was governor of Massachusetts.

"And I said, 'Well, gosh, can't we, can't we find some, some women that are also qualified?" said Romney. "I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women."

Romney's comment instantly sparked another social media phenomenon.

People across the "Twittersphere" tweeted in reaction to his wording.

"Romney: women inequality and discrimination is a social problem with economic repercussions NOT the other way around," said @ailishamacharia.

"So glad we have something to replace the Big Bird meme now that it's run its course," added @missuslovely.

A Twitter account named "@RomneyBinders" surfaced within minutes of the debate, posting tweets based off of the comment as well as retweeting other #binder tweets.

Facebook users also joined a "Binders Full of Women" page, which had 184,130 likes within three hours.

Even a new Tumblr blog was based on "Romney's binders," displaying edited images inspired by the debate.

And with early poll results showing Obama as the winner of Tuesday's debate and out speaking Romney by about 3 minutes, @RomneyBinders tweeted that one thing is clear about the debate moderator: "Candy Crowley is absolutely being removed from Romney's Binders tonight."
