Deputies said a Spartanburg man is accused of holding a woman against her will because she was trying to break up with him.
Spartanburg County deputies were called to a home on Cannon's Campground Road on Wednesday afternoon about a disturbance.
When deputies arrived, they said it took several tries to get someone to come to the door, and when Ashley Wrenix, 32, finally answered it, he told deputies he was home alone.
At that time, deputies learned a woman had called 911 from inside the home claiming to be hurt and held against her will, according to a deputy's report.
The report said deputies detained the man and then found the woman hidden in a bedroom with a bloody mouth. It said the man also had blood on his hands.
When they talked to the woman, deputies said she was planning to move out of the home because she wanted to break up with Wrenix. The report said she had spent the previous night with friends and was in the process of moving out.
The report said Wrenix hid behind bushes at the friend's house, grabbed her and punched her in the mouth, then dragged her along the road and into his car. He drove her back to his home and said he was going to "kill her and dump her body," according to the report.
FOX Carolina spoke to the victim, Veronica Wilson, who said the past few days had been some of the roughest in her life.
"He just kept grabbing me and grabbing me, and when I told him I wasn't coming with him, that's when he got in front of me and started punching me right in my mouth," said Wilson.
When she was forced into the bedroom, deputies said she got the chance to call 911. Wilson told FOX Carolina that the phone she used was an old, non-working cell phone, but thankfully it could still call 911.
While Wilson was left bloody and bruised, deputies said she was lucky to be alive.
"All you have to do is to let somebody know about it," Lt. Tony Ivey with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said. "And in this case, you know, this lady did; she was brave enough to make that phone call, even while deputies were there. She knew that might be her one last chance to be rescued."
Wilson is now out of the hospital and said she hopes she never goes back to that home and never sees Wrenix again.
Deputies said when they searched Wrenix's car, they found blood inside. Wrenix was arrested and charged with kidnapping and criminal domestic violence.
