A man was arrested and more are still at large after a man found them breaking into his home and alerted deputies, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

On Tuesday, a man came home just after 1 p.m. to find several men standing around a silver Ford Focus in his driveway on Laboratory Road. The homeowner called 911 as the men jumped into the car and drove away, deputies say.

Then, another man came out of the home and jumped in the victim's van, which already had items stolen from the house inside, the report states.

Another person helped track the van until deputies could reach the scene, and followed the van until it got a flat tire and wrecked on Gastonia Highway near Southside Church Road, deputies told WBTV.

James Lee Cowan, 23, of Newton was arrested and charged with one felony count each of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm by a felon, and larceny of a motor vehicle.

He was also charged by the North Carolina Highway Patrol for no operator's license, careless and reckless driving, driving left of center line, and unsafe tires, according to the report.

Cowan was booked into the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $35,000 bond.

The second vehicle, a silver 2012 Ford Focus, or its occupants, could not be located, but officials say the investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
