Rabon staying out of Congressional race

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Sen. Bill Rabon of Brunswick County says he is not endorsing either candidate in the 7th Congressional District race.

Reached by phone Tuesday, Rabon said although he did endorse Sen. David Rouzer in the Republican primary race, he is not endorsing Rouzer or his opponent, incumbent Rep. Mike McIntyre. Rouzer's campaign sent out a comment Monday, saying "David has the endorsement of all the NC Senators who represent counties in the 7th District", reacting to McIntyre's claim that he has support of 75% of mayors across eastern North Carolina.

No comment yet from the Rouzer campaign.

Rabon said he is "supporting the party" in his work for the Senate Republican Leadership Committee, helping to elect Republican senators across the state. Rabon did say he has offered to support Pat McCrory in his campaign for Governor of North Carolina, and Justice Paul Newby in his campaign for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court.

"I don't like campaigns that go ugly," Rabon said when asked about the McIntyre-Rouzer race. "They should focus on the issues and not on the negatives. I think we should change the political culture, and that's what I am trying to do."

Rabon is also involved in his own re-election campaign, running against challenger Danny Hefner in the NC Senate District 8 race.
