Designer Bags and Jewelry Sale Helps Kids

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

It was a morning of laughter and smiles at the Assistance League Thrift Store on South Tryon Street Tuesday.  Operation School Bell brought several children from local elementary schools in for new school uniforms, winter coats, shoes and fun!

The students are chosen for the program by school guidance counselors who see the children with the most need.  The Assistance League provides the children with two complete uniforms, two shirts and two pairs of pants.  They also provide them with toiletries and undergarments.  But perhaps the most exciting part of their personal shopping experience is when they get to pick out a brand new winter coat.

"It feels so snuggly," said Aaliya, the second grader from Briarwood Elementary I was honored to help.  Today the assistance League invites members of the local media to come be "personal shoppers" with the kids.  It's made all the more fun with the antics of Sir Purr and Rufus on hand.

The Assistance League is one of our areas longest running charitable organizations that is changing lives through the Operation Stop Hunger program, that offers kids a healthy after school snack.  Operation School Bell has clothed thousands of kids over the years.  Teen Court is another philanthropic program that gives teens a second chance after their first offense.

All of these programs are funding largely by the money raised at the Assistance League Thrift Store on South Tryon at 3600 South Tryon close to Clanton on the outskirts of SouthEnd.  They also make a large amount of their operating funds at their Baubles and Bags Event.

This Saturday the warehouse at the AL Thrift Store will be packed with frugal fashionistas shopping for great deals on some high end, designer bags and beautiful pieces of jewelry.  The doors open at 9am and close at 3pm. The experts recommend you come early.  There is always a good chance the line will start forming well before doors open.

The Assistance League is always looking for volunteers and financial support.  If you are interested in learning more about how you can help a real treasure in our community, click here.
