Belmont PD arrest two after high speed chase

A high-speed chase, that police said originated in Belmont, ended when two suspects abandoned the vehicle and tried to escape from police on foot.

The chase began at the Abbey Inn, which is located on the 7000 block of Wilkinson Boulevard in Belmont.

The hotel was under surveillance because of suspicion of drug activity, according to Lieutenant Richard Spry of the Belmont Police Department.

The suspect's vehicle was seen leaving the hotel and that is when officers attempted to pull them over. The suspects did not stop and led officers on a chase that exceeded 80 miles per hour at times.

The crash happened on Garrison Road in southwest Charlotte shortly before 10 p.m.

After a short foot chase, police were able to catch one of the suspects, Brandon Ayers, and then at about 11 p.m. Mary Jo Armitage was taken into custody, police said.

Once officers began to inspect the suspect's vehicle they found a strange liquid inside that had an unfamiliar odor.

That is when police asked for a hazmat team from the Charlotte Fire Department to respond to the scene and figure out what the substance is.

The fire department deemed the material to be non-toxic, although police haven't said what it was.

Ayers was charged with aid and abetting, resisting arrest, failure to appear, possess/sell non tax alcohol and probation violations. His bond was set at $25,000.

Armitage, who was driving the vehicle, was charged with flee to elude arrest by motor vehicle, resisting arrest, no driver's license, reckless driving, speeding, failure to yield red light, and three counts of non support of a child.

Her bond was set at $26,500.
