GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) -

A Gastonia teen led police on a high speed vehicle chase Tuesday morning after he is accused of assaulting an elderly man during a carjacking.

Tommy McRay, 17, of Charlotte, was leaving Steps for Success in Gastonia to return to Charlotte, according to the Gastonia Police Department.

Around 9:45 a.m., McRay approached 70-year-old Arthur Christy from Connecticut who had just pulled up at Eastridge Mall.

McRay put Christy in a choke hold, punched and kicked him, took his car and left in his car, police said.

He drove down Interstate 85 into Charlotte where he got off on the Tuckaseegee Road exit.

MCRay sideswiped two cars as he turned onto Bradford Drive, went up a few feet and crashed into a stop sign on Lowell Street.

Police say speeds got up to around 100 miles per hour.
