New charges filed against man who allegedly tried to kill cab driver

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – The man accused of stabbing a Charlotte taxi cab driver and stealing his car last Friday, was charged with two additional counts of stalking on Tuesday. The charges were filed while he was behind bars.

Brian David Chandler, also known as Brian David Irons, 41, was arrested and charged last week with robbing and trying to kill cab driver Gary Hinson. The cab driver remains in a local hospital, recovering from his injuries.

"I don't understand why this happened to my dad," said his son Rico Hinson.

The incident occurred at Park and Fairview Roads, Friday around 7:40 a.m., according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Hinson, the cab driver, suffered cuts to his face, head, neck, arms and hands, according to police.

Police say Chandler crashed the cab into a phone poll just up the street in front of Selwyn Commons Condominiums on the 4900 block of Park Road.

Chandler is charged with assault with a deadly with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, vehicle theft and interference with an electronic monitoring device, police said.

Records show this is not Chandler's first arrest. Court documents from Ohio show Chandler was arrested for harassing a woman and her mother on a video tape. Rico Hinson says he was aware of a similar case in Missouri.

"I'm completely hurt and I'm in total shock that someone with a record that bad can be let out in society again," Hinson said.

Chandler already had a scheduled court appearance scheduled for October 29 for charges including harassing phone calls, filing a false police report and stalking, according to court records.

"We all want him home. From Friday until now is a complete 180. He is talking. It's not clear but he is talking," Hinson said.

Authorities would not elaborate on the new stalking charges, filed on Tuesday. Hinson says his father will undergo intense speech therapy.
