York County Sheriff warns of phone scammers impersonating as an officer

YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -

York County Sheriff's office would like to warn the public of a recent phone scam in York County. The Sheriff's office has received four different reports where victims state they've received calls from individuals impersonating law enforcement officers.

In one case reported on October 2, 2012, the victim advised she received numerous calls from a man identifying himself as Officer Adam Smith with the Rock Hill Police Department.

The number on the victim's caller ID showed a Rock Hill Police number. There is no Adam Smith that works for the York County Sheriff's Office or Rock Hill Police Department.

The goal of the scam is to scare the intended victim into sending money "they owe" to a company.  If the victim refuses the scammer then threatens victims if they did not pay the money, officers would come to their home and arrest them within two hours.

If you receive a call from a person identifying themselves as a law enforcement officer from the York County Sheriff's Office or Rock Hill Police Department demanding money simply ignore it and hang up.

Citizens can call the Sheriff's office at 803-684-3059 or Rock Hill Police Department at 803-329-7200 to verify if the call is legitimate.

York County Sheriff Bruce Bryant warns do not be victims of phone scams.

The public should be alert to unusual phone calls and prior to giving out confidential information, verify the identity of the caller; hang up immediately if you suspect that the call is a scam.
