CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - For Sgt. Ben Dellinger it's the last thing he really needed to complete his recovery. In 2007 while on foot patrol in Baghdad, Iraq, he was seriously wounded by an improvised explosive device. The since-retired Sergeant lost his leg in the explosion.
Tuesday morning, Bank of America along with The Military Warriors Support Foundation, presented Dellinger with an almost 3,000 square foot home in North Charlotte. The whole thing comes mortgage free.
"I guess it just gives me a sense of stability and normalcy and I never have to worry about my son having a place to live which is the best feeling you can possibly have as a parent," said Dellinger.
Throughout the day Tuesday, volunteers worked to spruce up the home by painting walls and trimming hedges.
Dellinger was also presented with a surprise. In front of a crowd of volunteers and friends, officials announced Dellinger has been named the honorary race starter for the Bank of America 500 on October 13th at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
