DOT worker killed in Tuesday morning crash

DEEP GAP, NC (WBTV) - The North Carolina DOT told WBTV a DOT worker was killed in a crash early Tuesday morning.

Watauga County Deputies shut down Old Highway 421 at Brown Farm Road in Deep Gap at about 5 a.m. due to that deadly wreck.

Late Tuesday, the NC Highway Patrol confirmed the DOT worker was David Cook from Boone. Investigators say Robert Schafer of Deep Gap hit Cook, who was wearing the proper safety gear, and has his vehicle properly marked.

Investigators are still working the case but have ruled out speed or any kind of impairment as a factor. Troopers told WBTV the DA will decide if any charges will be filed.
