"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
This Saturday, thousands will gather in Marshall Park in uptown Charlotte for the Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure.
The goal is to help end breast cancer forever.
And WBTV is a sponsor.
There was some controversy earlier this year over funding to Planned Parenthood by some Komen affiliates.
Many have had questions about that…including our board as we considered this editorial.
So, we did some research, and here's what we found.
Komen Charlotte has never supported Planned Parenthood.
No funds raised through the Race for the Cure, or any donations to Komen Charlotte have ever gone to Planned Parenthood.
When you support Komen Charlotte, 75% of net contributions fund health grants in our local community.
They are awarded to non-profit organizations that provide early detection and life-saving treatments.
These local funds directly benefit local people – many who could not afford treatment any other way.
The remaining 25% goes to fund research to find a cure. We've included a link with more information on our SpeakOut page at WBTV dot com.
We hope you'll consider taking part in this year's Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure.
It's an inspiring event that celebrates survivors and unites us all in the fight against breast cancer.
That's something we all can get behind.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
