Street renamed for Dr. Spurgeon Webber Jr.

CHARLOTTE (WBTV) - The city of Charlotte paid special recognition to a local philanthropist by renaming a street in his honor.

Residents in the Historic West End were on hand as Keller Avenue became Dr. Webber Avenue Saturday.

The late Dr. Spurgeon Webber, Junior served the Charlotte community for more than 50 years until his death last year.

Congressman Mel Watt says the process of getting the street re-named brought back memories.

Dr. Spurgeon Webber was Charlotte's first African-American dentist.

His children, who were in attendance Saturday, still run the dental practice.
