GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) - A Gaston County museum is working on a "green" roof, the first of its kind in Gastonia.

The Schiele Museum of Natural History is going green and educating the community at the same time with a brand new vegetative roof.

The roof is part of renovations that will increase the size and educational offerings at the museum, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

In addition to helping with insulation and cutting down on storm water runoff, the roof will also serve as an educational tool for students and visitors.

"Part of what drives us is the ability to have a wonderful place for our families to come and to learn together and inspire our students," said Dr. Ann Tippitt, president and director of the museum. "Hopefully we're inspiring some future environmental engineers."

The green roof features 10,000 plants. Construction on the area will continue for several months, and the roof will be open to the public in February.
