Break-in suspect wraps himself in insulation, hides in attic, police say

Two men are in jail are police say they broke into two homes, one of them even tried to avoid capture by wrapping himself in insulation and hiding in the attic.

On the morning of September 13, officers at the Kannapolis Police Department responded to a burglar alarm activation on Lakeview Street.

When officers arrived they found that the side door to theresidence had been kicked in. While officers were investigating this burglary a second alarm was activated on Fairmont Circle in Kannapolis.

This is only a short distance through a wooded area from Lakeview Street. Officers quickly responded to Fairmont Circle.

As officers were attempting to set up a perimeter around the residence, one of the suspects attempted to exit the house. When he noticed police officers in the yard, he quickly retreated back into the residence.

A K-9 was used to search the residence and one suspect was located hiding on the second floor and was taken into custody. A second suspect was later found by officers.

He had wrapped himself in insulation and was hiding in the attic of the residence. Officers later learned that the residence was occupied when the suspects entered it. The occupants of the residence had locked themselves into an upstairs bathroom. They were not injured during the incident.

Kevin Marcell Harris and Kevin Duanne Kirkpatrick were charged with felony breaking and entering of both residences. It is suspected they may have been involved in other area burglaries.

More charges are expected in the case. Both suspects are currently in the Cabarrus County Jail.
