Race For The Cure: CMS employee discovered her own lump in 2003

Editor's Note: This is the third in a six part series where we introduce you to Charlotte breast cancer survivors.  It's in preparation as we count down to the annual Charlotte Komen Race For The Cure on Oct. 6th.

58-year old Ellen Lemmon, a maintenance operation supervisor with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, found her own lump in 2003.

"It was on my left breast," she told Anchor Molly Grantham.  "It was just tiny.  I thought it was maybe nothing.  So I told my husband, but I told him not to worry.  Then I called my doctor."

The doctor confirmed it was Stage II breast cancer.  Ellen immediately started doing what so many women do – worrying about everyone else.

"Sure enough you know," she says, "I was thinking the people around me.  My son and my family."

From there on, she says she did what she needed to do.  She had surgery – a lumpectomy on the right side – six weeks of chemotherapy and 32 rounds of radiation.  She calls it all "very intense".

"You know how you don't think about things until they happen?", she says.  "Well, after it had happened I realized how many women are affected.  I got very involved."

Ellen is on her eighth year now volunteering with the Charlotte branch of Susan G. Komen.  She talks with other women to help pull them through the rough times.

She also has an annual "Race for the Cure" team.  It's called "The Angels".  Lots of her CMS co-workers are members out there with her.

If you want to come support "Race for the Cure" on October 6th, register now!  We invite you to be a part of WBTV's crew.  We have two teams – morning anchor John Carter is captain of "Team John" and evening anchor Molly Grantham is captain of "Team Molly".

It's a $30 tax-deductible donation and in return you get two t-shirts (one Komen and one WBTV).  To register, click the team link below.  Any questions?  Email mgrantham@wbtv.com or jcarter@wbtv.com.
