Wingate University ranked 6th in Best Value in the South

Wingate University is now listed 6th among Best Value colleges and universities in the South. That rank is based on quality and net cost. The rankings of the nation's top schools were released Wednesday in U.S. News & World Report's 2013 Best Colleges.

Wingate University is the highest-rated school in North Carolina, having moved up two rankings from last year. Elsewhere in the Carolinas, Appalachian State University rated 7th; The Citadel 8th; and Elon University 15th

"I'm proud to work at a university that makes an outstanding education so affordable for our students," said Vice President for Student Life and Enrollment Services Rhett Brown. "Wingate is within financial reach of a much broader population than most people assume."

U.S. News considers a school's academic quality combined with the 2011-12 net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid. "Wingate University welcomed the largest student body to our institution this fall with 2,648 students enrolled in our graduate, professional and undergraduate programs," said Dr. Jerry E. McGee, president. "They will be taught by the best credentialed faculty we have ever assembled. These are very good days for our institution."

According to the U.S. News website, "the higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal. Only schools ranked in or near the top half of their categories are included, because U.S. News considers the most significant values to be among colleges that are above average academically."

Wingate serves nearly 2,700 students on three campuses in Wingate, Matthews, and Hendersonville.

Founded in 1896, the University offers 34 undergraduate majors, 37 minors and career concentrations, numerous pre-professional programs, graduate degrees in business, accounting, education, physician assistant studies and sport administration, and doctorates in pharmacy and education. With a 14 to 1 student/teacher ratio, Wingate students gain the tools and support needed to excel in academics and apply that learning toward an extraordinary career and life.

In addition to a robust intramural athletics program, Wingate student athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division II sports. The University has won the South Atlantic Conference Echols Athletic Excellence Award for the past six years.
