CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
Summer 2012 was the third hottest summer on record in the US since records began in 1895.
The average temperature in the contiguous United States between June and August was over 74°, according to NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. That's more than 2° above normal. The exceptional drought conditions in the Midwest likely played a role, as temperatures in parts of Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska were 6-8° above normal.
The only summers that have been hotter are 2011 and 1936.
Here in Charlotte we tied the all-time record high temperature of 104° three times over the summer.
