DNC day 3: Preparing for the President's speech

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Tonight is the biggest night of the Democratic National Convention and crews are working right now to prepare Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Arena is where President Obama will officially accept the Democratic Party's nomination for President. Delegates officially nominated President Obama early Thursday morning. You can read that story here.

Part of Thursday's preparations included talent sound checks. We attached video to this story of the Foo Fighters and James Taylor practicing Thursday afternoon.

Mister President arrived in Charlotte Wednesday afternoon on Air Force One. At Charlotte Douglas International Airport, he greeted the families of the fallen North Carolina airmen killed while fighting wildfires this summer. See President Obama's arrival in Charlotte here.

Wednesday also brought a surprise announcement from convention organizers and the Obama campaign. The President was scheduled to speak at Bank of America Stadium, but officials decided to move the speech to the markedly smaller Time Warner Cable Arena, amid concerns about the weather. Read here. There was an immediate backlash to the decision, which the GOP announced was because the Democrats couldn't fill the seats. Thousands of people with community credentials, meanwhile, can't get into Time Warner Cable Arena. They took part in a conference call with the President Thursday early afternoon, to learn more about the decision. There are several watch parties tonight, click here.

Thursday, WBTV crews saw a sign at the stadium about the venue change. The sign alerted people that the convention would no longer take place there. Read here.

WBTV crews are spread out around Uptown Charlotte, in the Convention Center, and Time Warner Cable Arena. We will bring you new information as we learn it.
