Cyber tip leads to child porn conviction

CONCORD, NC (WBTV) -

A Mecklenburg County man was convicted of sex crimes on a minor Tuesday after a Cyber tip alerted police to child pornography.

Jearrell Clayton Yates, 39, of Cornelius pled guilty to Attempted Statutory Rape, four counts of Second Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor and Dissemination of Obscene Material to a Minor in a Cabarrus County Superior courtroom.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office got a Cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in March of 2011. The tip showed an image of child pornography allegedly sent from a home in Midland.

According to investigators, a child at the home admitted to having a sexual encounter with Yates, a work acquaintance of her step-father, in Concord.

The victim told detectives Yates showed her child pornography and emailed a picture of his own genitals, the sheriff's office said.

Hundreds of photos and videos of child pornography were later found on Yates' computer, investigators said.

Yates received a consolidated sentence of 92-122 months in prison after sparing the minor victim from testifying in court as part of his plea agreement.

He will be required to register as a sex offender when released from prison.
