The protesters arrested during Tuesday's "No Papers, No Fear" rally in Uptown Charlotte have been released, according to a statement from the group.
Ten people were arrested Tuesday afternoon, and charged with impeding traffic. Read about Tuesday's protests and arrests here. You can read the initial statement from "No Papers, No Fear" on the arrests here.
Early Wednesday morning, the group released the following statement about the release of the protesters:
"Because of federal immigration policies such as 287(g) and Secure Communities, undocumented migrants face a risk of any interaction with police resulting in deportation that tears them from their loved ones on a daily basis. Yesterday, undocumented No Papers No Fear riders protested those policies by placing themselves at that same risk in a public act of civil disobedience at the doorstep of the Democratic National Convention.
Riders unfurled a banner that read 'No Papers No Fear' in front of the entryway to the Democratic National Convention and told their stories of conquering the fear they've lived under as undocumented people confronting the human rights crisis caused by current immigration policies. A statement the group made online, explained that " At approximately 5:00pm police arrested all 10 participants and loaded them in a police van.
Support networks were immediately mobilized through social media and other channels to call upon the President and Immigration authorities to be on the right side of history and not pursue deportation proceedings against the riders and to cancel the federal programs that conscript local law enforcement as force multipliers in immigration enforcement.
The support and pressure caused by the public act of risk and sacrifice were successful in proving what riders set out to demonstrate in their six week journey from Arizona to the Democratic National Convention, that the only secure community is an organized one and that migrant communities are safer when they come out of the shadows than when they remain hidden. All 10 undocumented riders were released on bond in the early morning of today, September 5th. "
