Sewer overflow reaches Union County river

UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Part of a sewer overflow reached a Union County river last week, authorities report. The sanitary overflow occurred August 29 off Old Fish Road and lasted an hour. Part of the 3,000 gallon overflow entered Grassy Branch.

Union County officials say the overflow was not significant enough to cause immediate danger to human health or the environment. They're blaming the overflow on heavy rain and flooding that caused storm water to enter the sanitary sewer system.

The incident has been reported to the state division of water quality. The county has an ongoing program designed to reduce the amount of storm water entering the sewer system.
