WBTV Speak Out Editorial: Keeping the Peace at the DNC

We're right in the middle of the highest-profile event the Queen City has ever hosted, the Democratic National Convention.

One aspect that has impressed us is the way uptown security has been planned and executed.

The performance of the combined law enforcement force from Charlotte-Mecklenburg and across the country has been stellar.

If you've been uptown, you've seen a mighty presence, designed not to threaten or to curtail activity, but simply to keep the peace.

Whether on bikes, horseback or on foot, their show of strength has been impressive.

And it's worked.

To this point, with thousands of visitors and with large groups protesting, there have been just two arrests.

The officers' behavior has been impeccable.

Even when intentionally challenged, they've been restrained, respectful, polite and professional.

And we'd like to give a pat on the back to Chief Rodney Monroe, who has been a very visible and effective leader for this coordinated security effort.

Now, we still have a bit more of the Convention to go.

But so far, so good.

To the thousands of officers helping make this an enjoyable, vibrant, and yet peaceful gathering, we say "Thank You."
