Democratic National Convention and Labor Day impact travel

Posted: Updated:

The North Carolina Department of Transportation suspended most construction projects this Labor Day holiday to help motorists save time on major routes across the state. The exception is in Charlotte, where the Democratic National Convention is causing significant road closures, parking restrictions, and changes to public transportation routes.

Motorists can expect heavy traffic delays and congested areas in Uptown Charlotte, specifically around Time Warner Cable Arena and Bank of America Stadium. Roads that will be most congested are I-77,I-85, I-485, U.S. 74, and N.C. 27.

Drivers should try to:

Leave early. Travel at non-peak hours when possible.

Stay alert. Even if work is suspended, there may be narrowed lanes and traffic shifts in work zone areas.

Stay informed. Real-time travel information is available by dialing 511.

Avoid distracted driving. When drivers stop focusing on the road ahead, they react more slowly to traffic conditions and are more likely to be involved in an accident.
