With increased highway traffic this Labor Day holiday, local sheriffs are asking motorists to follow a few simple safety tips:
Always shift attention every few seconds, constantly scanning the road in front and behind. Drivers should never blankly fix their gaze at one point on the road.
Always signal intentions with brake lights, turn signals, horn, and headlights so that other drivers can see well before changing course.
Drivers should always aim high in steering. That is, glance frequently at points well forward. Not only will this help in steering, but will also help drivers check the position of vehicles in front as well as on-coming traffic.
Never follow too close. Remember that, as speed increases, it takes substantially longer to stop. Also remember, it's good to have an extra cushion of space in front on a slippery road, or in low visibility conditions.
