ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -
Dozens gathered at West Rowan High School today to honor the lives of two students who were killed in a car accident on the first day of school.
Cody Rives, 16, and Tyrelle Johnson, 15, died Monday when Rives lost control of the car he was driving and hit a wall of the Second Creek bridge on Sherrills Ford Road in Salisbury. The car then crossed the center line and hit an SUV, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Saturday's visitation started in the school gym, followed by the funeral.
Christian Talbert, one of Tyrelle's close friends, was at the visitation. He described Tyrelle as, "A good kid," adding, "He'd do everything that he could for people".
Talbert's mother was also at the visitation, and explained how close Cody and Tyrelle, or "Ty" as his friends called him, were, "Ty and Cody called each other brothers, even though they aren't officially brothers."
The JROTC, of which Tyrelle was a member, raised the school's flag and then lowered it to half staff in memory of the two friends.
West Rowan High School has brought counselors in to talk with students this week.
