DNC guests pass on hotels, choose rental homes

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

It's move in day for Jennifer Stewart. She's a lobbyist from Washington, DC.  She decided to rent a luxury condo instead of booking a hotel for the DNC.

"It gives me a feeling like I am at home," Stewart said.  "So when I want to calm down, lay out on a couch, grab some fruit or bottle of water. I don't have to worry about room service or anything like that."

Trent Corbin found the condo for Stewart.  He owns Providence Property Management. His clients include.

"Strategy groups, consulting groups," Corbin said. "But we also see international delegation group, international consulates and international journalists, and politicians."

Corbin says people are paying between $3500 - $10,000 for the week of the DNC.  Some people are renting out their homes to earn some money while others are doing it because they have fallen on hard times.

"We know that they were facing some personal financial issues," Corbin said.  "And it was making it tougher on them."

Stewart says she likes having a condo for the week. It allows her the opportunity to entertain some of her clients and friends.

"Some of my friends who want to get away from everything," Stewart said.  "That is so hectic, political all the time.  It's really nice here. The pool on the rooftop."

Some people in condo buildings don't want the DNC guests. They have problems with their neighbors using their homes for profit.

"We did talk to some of the HOA's," Corbin said.  "And tried to work with them.  There were some buildings that it wasn't going to work and we understood that - and we stayed away from that."

Corbin says since the DNC has come to Charlotte, people are now choosing the Queen City as a destination.

"So many people have said they want to come back," Corbin said.  "They want to vacation here and spend some time here and we want to continue this trend of a shorter term rental in the Charlotte market.  It's a niche that didn't exist before."

While Corbin waits for more business to come, Stewart is enjoying her home away from home no matter the cost.

"I'd rather spend a little bit more money," Stewart said.  "To get a home versus staying in a hotel."
