FORT MILL, SC (WBTV) - A rescue group spent the last several months caring for and removing dozens of cats and kittens from an alleged animal hoarder.
Volunteers with the Animal Adoption League say a boy running past a house last October noticed a foul odor and numerous cats in the yard. He alerted his mom, an AAL volunteer. The Tega Cay man was eventually evicted.
AAL took in more than 30 animals. They say animal control trapped the rest.
"These cats are just so deserving..just look at them. They're gorgeous cats, they're so well adjusting coming from the situation they've been in," Volunteer Diane Moore said.
"We found a gentleman that it was raining cats on him..he had so many cats and kittens and several dogs. He was in a bad situation because he couldn't care for them. He was trying to," Vivien Downes said.
There was no more room for the cats in foster homes so a local lawyer let the group lease a building for a couple of months.
An old car lot office at the corner of Gold Hill Road and Highway 160 is now known as the "Cat House."
"If we didn't have this building, we couldn't have done this at all," Moore said.
Eleven cats still need good homes and their time at the temporary shelter is about to run out. The building is up for sale and the group knows it could be sold at any point.
"We've used up a lot of our donations [paying rent]," Moore said.
Thanks to a local vet and the Charlotte Humane Society the cats have been spayed or neutered and are up to date with shots.
The group plans to hold events every Saturday until the end of September to make that happen. The next event is Saturday from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. To learn more, click here. Donations can also be made on their website.
