CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
The Democratic National Convention starts next week. Center City will be under tight security. A security expert says it's possible some protestors will venture away from Uptown and into nearby neighborhoods.
Security expert Ross Bulla says the bad apples want attention, and will follow events. If those events are in your area – he says it's possible a few bad apples will show up, and act up. If there's a residential neighborhood in the path of a march, he says neighbors should be on guard. He says, "If they're [protesters] unhappy with the location they're marching – they'll branch off and make a beeline for where they want to go. It doesn't matter if it's through or over personal property."
Tom Donaldson, president of the Dilworth Community Development Association, says neighbors in Dilworth talked to CMPD about rogue protestors coming into their community. He says "I think the belief was they were fully prepared Uptown - but have they thought about how it would affect neighboring communities as well?" Donaldson went on, "What we understood from CMPD was they were also concerned about the area outside the cordoned area uptown."
Bulla says "I would for one thing make sure I left my lights on and I would probably make sure I was sitting outside as much as I could taking away that anonymity."
