CATS starts work on temporary transit center

Posted: Updated:

CATS has started to transform a gravel lot on the corner of Third and South Mint Streets into its temporary transit center - trying to stuff every convenience riders may want under one white tend.

"The tent going up will be an air conditioned tent," says CATS' John Trunk. "It's an 80 by 40 that will have a wood floor and tables."

There will be food available, Porta Johns, ticket and customer service.

"Everything that a transit rider has come to expect from CATS they'll find those three days during the DNC," says Trunk.

"But how are we going to know where to catch the buses," frets Margaret Hamilton. Back at the real Transit Center today, though, riders were nervous about the move. "And that's a big thing. We do get confused a whole lot about where the buses are going to be and where they're not going to be."

Well, they won't be at the regular transit center after Sunday.

CATS will take up its temporary quarters on Labor Day, staying on there through Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Thursday, when the convention focus shifts to Bank of America stadium for President Obama's acceptance speech...very near the temporary site...then CATS will get bussed off again, this time, back home.

Trunk says they're really at the mercy of Secret Service.

"We had to move it here because we were in the secure zone in close proximity to the arena and Secret Service deemed it necessary for security purposes," he says.
