Helping the homeless during the DNC

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Homeless families may be forced to move out of their temporary shelters at extended-stay motels because of rising rates during the Democratic National Convention.

As the convention nears - we've learned of an unintended consequence.

Homeless families who live in local hotels - may be forced out onto the streets.

A lot of the motels where homeless families live are selling those rooms to out-of-towners.

Local houses of worship are helping the homeless during the DNC.

That's where churches like Covenant Presbyterian come in.

They are providing meals and a place to sleep for several mothers and children.

It's especially important during the first week of school.

"We feel that this is especially important at this time of year." said Courtney St. Onge with covenant Presbyterian Church.

"Many of those children are starting school.  And having been displaced from where they usually stay are concerned about making sure they get started in school, and they don't miss those days."

Covenant Presbyterian has a nice family room set up where the mothers and children can watch a movie, read a book, play a game, and hopefully have a good night.

Urban Ministries is helping to organize the effort.
